Angelina County bears the name of a famous Caddo woman who served as an interpreter and cultural intermediary between Native and European peoples in the early 18th century — a name that gestures at the deep history of this East Texas region. Today, the county is best known as the home of Lufkin, the regional hub of the Texas Piney Woods, and as the heart of what remains one of America's most productive timber-producing regions. With a population of around 87,000 — making it one of the more populous counties in the SETX region outside Jefferson County — Angelina County blends the economic diversity of a regional center with the natural grandeur of the Piney Woods landscape. Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the largest lake entirely within Texas, dominates the county's eastern geography and drives an enormous recreational economy.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir — Texas's Largest Lake

Sam Rayburn Reservoir covers approximately 114,500 acres — making it the largest lake entirely within the borders of Texas — and sits largely within Angelina County. The reservoir was completed in 1965 by the US Army Corps of Engineers and named for legendary Texas congressman Sam Rayburn. Largemouth bass fishing on Sam Rayburn is world-famous in bass fishing circles, and the lake consistently produces trophy-sized fish that attract professional and amateur tournament anglers from across the country. Beyond fishing, the reservoir supports boating, camping, and lakefront recreation that drives a significant portion of the county's tourism economy.

Angelina National Forest

The Angelina National Forest encompasses approximately 154,000 acres in and around Angelina County, providing public land for hunting, hiking, camping, and wildlife observation adjacent to Sam Rayburn. The forest supports populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, feral hog, and numerous small mammal and bird species, and its bottomland hardwood areas adjacent to the reservoir provide critical habitat for a range of wildlife. The national forest's trail system includes hiking routes that range from easy walks to multi-day backpacking routes through diverse Piney Woods habitats. Lufkin's Regional Economy

Lufkin's economic profile as a regional hub is covered in detail in its own city guide, but at the county level, Angelina County's economic diversity is noteworthy. Manufacturing — including GE Oil & Gas (formerly Lufkin Industries), wood products, food processing, and a range of other industries — employs a significant portion of the workforce. Healthcare, anchored by UT Health East Texas's Lufkin operations, is a major employer. Retail and professional services serving the entire Piney Woods region contribute a significant commercial tax base. Angelina College provides accessible higher education and workforce development across the county.

Forestry Heritage and the Timber Economy

Angelina County's name for its primary river — the Angelina River — and the river's course through the county's forests reflect the deep connection between this land and its timber heritage. Commercial timber operations have been active in Angelina County since the late 19th century, and the county remains one of Texas's most productive timber-producing regions today. Major timber companies manage extensive pine plantation lands in the county, and the forest products supply chain — from seedling nurseries to sawmills to paper production — creates employment across multiple economic sectors.
