Boat Ramps and Marinas in Southeast Texas — Getting on the Water
From Toledo Bend Reservoir to the Gulf Coast bays, Southeast Texas has some of Texas's best fishing and boating — here's a guide to public boat ramps and marinas throughout the region.
Southeast Texas is defined by water. The Neches River, the Sabine River, Toledo Bend Reservoir, Lake Sam Rayburn, Lake Livingston, the Sabine-Neches Canal, Sabine Lake, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Gulf of Mexico itself — the region offers an extraordinary range of aquatic environments for boating, fishing, and water sports. Getting on the water requires knowing where the boat ramps are, which marinas offer fuel and service, and which bodies of water are best suited for different types of watercraft. This guide covers the major launch facilities and marinas serving the Golden Triangle and surrounding East Texas lake country.
Sabine Lake and the Gulf Coast Bays
Sabine Lake sits on the Texas-Louisiana border, where the Sabine River meets the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway before flowing to the Gulf. This large, shallow estuary — approximately 90 square miles — is a premier redfish and flounder fishery, and several boat ramps and marinas serve the area. Bridge City, Port Arthur, and Groves all have waterfront access points. Sea-rim State Park, located on the Gulf beach west of Sabine Pass, offers a boat ramp and access to the near-shore Gulf fishing grounds.
Toledo Bend Reservoir
Toledo Bend is the crown jewel of East Texas boating and fishing. The Sabine River Authority maintains multiple public boat ramps around the Texas side of the lake, with marinas and fishing camps concentrated along SH-87 (the primary access road for the Texas shore). Burkeville (Newton County) and Hemphill (Sabine County) are the two closest Texas towns to the dam and the main lake basin. Full-service marinas on Toledo Bend offer fuel, bait, fishing guides, and boat rentals.
Lake Sam Rayburn
Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Angelina County is one of Texas's premier bass fishing lakes, with more than 114,000 surface acres. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains multiple public boat ramps around the lake's perimeter, and several private marinas offer full services. Jasper and Zavalla are the primary gateway towns. The lake hosts numerous professional and amateur fishing tournaments throughout the year, and the associated marina and guide fishing economy is substantial.
Lake Livingston and Other Inland Lakes
Lake Livingston in Polk, Trinity, San Jacinto, and Walker counties provides another significant boating destination, with Texas Parks and Wildlife and LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority) managing public access points. B.A. Steinhagen Lake near Jasper and Village Creek in Hardin County offer additional options for smaller watercraft.
